How To Read Literature Like a Professor (Chapters 20-21)
Chapter 20
In Calvin Harris' song Summer he uses the season of summer in a traditional that almsot seems whimsical. He plays on the summer love that everyone has expirienced one time or another in their lives. Summer, as we all know it to be, is the favored season out of all others. It's a time of love and happiness, where there is no worries of school and classes. As we all know, summer love and the season of summer is all built upon the lie that they will last forever, and as Harris puts it in his song, "you act so innocent now but you lied so soon." those two lines describe summer perfectly. It's fun while it lasted but it won't last forever, so live it up as though it will.
"Summer"
When I met you in the summer To my heartbeat sound We fell in love As the leaves turned brown And we could be together baby As long as skies are blue You act so innocent now But you lied so soon When I met you in the summer When I met you in the summer To my heartbeat sound We fell in love As the leaves turned brown And we could be together baby As long as skies are blue You act so innocent now But you lied so soon When I met you in the summer
Interlude
In my own words an archetype is when one manipulates literary work to make a new piece, it could be a poem, song, book or even another story. Many examples of this can be found in the movie Shrek. Shrek encompasses almost all of the nursery rhymes that we have heard as children and brings them all together to form an entirely new story straying away from traditional children's version and adding them to a fantastical quest.
Chapter 21 Harry Potter is most know for the scar on his forehead in the shape of a lightning bolt. It the result of a failed murder attempt by Lord Voldemort when he struck a baby Harry with a Curse. What Voldemort didn't know was that by putting the curse on Harry he embeded part of himself in Harry too. Throughout the Harry Potter saga the scar becomes his emblem. He tries to hide it as though he is self concious about it, when he should wear it proud. As his character progresses he gets more comfortable with the scar as if showing he is growing more powerful. When Harry "dies" Voldemort dies as well freeing Harry from Voldemort's clutch. In the end Harry lives, the scar, which was part of Voldemort is still apart of him, but it no longer holds significants, showing that Harry has fullfilled his life's purpose.
